Your road to good sleep starts when you wake up, who knew?! Sounds nuts and a bit labour intensive and yes who doesn't spend some days dreaming about going to bed!
When I started my journey of getting back to the person I vaguely remembered being I was dragging myself to bed, absolutely exhausted before 9pm. Sometimes my son was still awake.
I slept terribly, woke in the night worrying about literally everything, which in the cold light of day didn't worry me at all.
I even woke with massive anxiety about what I was going to worry about, honestly, it was blinking awful and I kind of just accepted that was my life now.
I guess as a woman and mother you just accept things the way they are, even if that aren't actually serving you!
The irony is that by just accepting the way I was feeling , I was hurting all the other areas of my life, INCLUDING my family and my relationships.
We aren't liner people, one size doesn't fit all, and all areas of your life have to be aligned in order for you to live the amazing life that you want!
And the first step is good quality sleep.
Your body knows when you wake up and go to sleep due to its Circadian rhythm. It tells you when it is morning and when it is nighttime.
A great example of this is newborns. Their Circadian rhythm isn't established which is one of the reasons why they can often be awake all night and asleep (if you are lucky) in the day.
According to Sleep Organisation...
'When properly aligned, a circadian rhythm can promote consistent and restorative sleep. But when this circadian rhythm is thrown off, it can create significant sleep problems, including insomnia. Research is also revealing that circadian rhythms play an integral role in diverse aspects of physical and mental health.'
So the question is what can we do in the day to help is drift off each night?
Drink your morning tea or coffee in the garden, even if its not sunny as light exposure regulates your circadian rhythm. Morning sunlight suppresses melatonin and it gradually rises throughout the day, peaking in the evening and making you feel sleepy.
Take a 20 minute lunchtime walk has many benefits including boosting your mood, increasing your fitness and helps foster creativity. But according to The National Sleep Foundation a walk in nature can help your sleep quality.
Brain dump seems to be the buzz word at the moment but there is compelling research that shows that putting everything on your mind, that you are trying to remember, can help you fall asleep and stay asleep.
Journalling as my go to everyday for many different reasons but studies have shown that help you fall asleep quicker. Writing down your worries, fears, and tasks that you need to do tomorrow can help declutter your mind and quieten your mind. This leads to lower stress levels and helps stop you waking in the night worrying.
I am giving away my brain dump and journalling pack that I use every night to help clear my mind and process my worries and thoughts.
